David Blaine previous effort back in 2006 was failed for holding his breath underwater. He had to hold his breath for eight minutes and 58 seconds. His failing nearly two minutes short of the record. This time he prepared so well to bag this new record.
In his training in the Cayman Islands David worked really hard. The magician had shown details of his training regimen on his personal blog, including the nights he’s slept in a special hypoxic tent, that was is filled with lower than normal levels of oxygen. Says Blaine: “I’ve been sleeping here for a month – and I was just in Cayman where I’ve been training on holding my breath. And I’ve been getting pretty good, so my times have been getting much better.”
Blaine’s new record is amazing considering one the way he has done it. In a 4000 ltr glass tank. The feat was broadcast live during The Oprah Winfrey Show and the studio audience cheered as divers pulled the 35-year-old magician from a water-filled sphere. Blaine had a smile on his face soon after his head rose above the water and he took several deep gulps of air. Within about a minute, he was able to hold a microphone and tell Winfrey, “I feel great,” later adding that breaking the record was a fulfillment of “a lifelong dream.”
Before his attempt, Blaine was allowed to inhale pure oxygen for up to 30 minutes, although he inhaled for only 23 minutes.it was done through a mask to saturate his blood with oxygen and flush out carbon dioxide. A Guinness World Records judge was on hand to certify the feat.
